Breck is thrilled to offer an intensive two-week summer program for Twin Cities high school students interested in exploring the intersection of policy and social justice with thought leaders from across the country. For our inaugural summer, we’ll be offer a track focused on immigration. In addition to in-depth, community-based learning, participants will connect with civically engaged peers to create a supportive network of changemakers.
Immigration Track: The track will focus on the broad range of experiences of refugees, asylum seekers, and other immigrants in the United States. In particular, we’ll focus on the refugee experience in the Twin Cities and the migrant experience along the southern US border. Participants will ground their exploration of law, policy, human rights, and public opinion in United States’ immigration history. This will highlight individual stories that are often lost in the policy discussions of immigration reform.
This two-week Creative Writing course is for 9th-12th grade students, from introductory to highly experienced in Creative Writing. Cultivating intentional artistic practice, we will discuss how to observe the world around us more intentionally and how to turn enhanced and detailed observation into poetry, fiction, non-fiction and drama. Each student will develop a project, choosing a lens through which to look at the Cities where we live, and we'll take group field trips, both to inspire new ways of looking at our Minneapolis - St. Paul world and to visit places specifically chosen to fit into students' individual projects. A literary form, the ekphrastic is a description of a work of art. We will treat your chosen focus about the Cities as an observable work of art and develop your writing as descriptions about that art, telling stories and capturing images with words, all while experimenting with a wide array of forms and literary devices.
It’s acting! It’s law! It’s competitive! It’s mock trial! Join National Champion and All-American Attorney Chris Erickson and they will help you crush your opponents with your words.
